Ton Akkerman, DVM
Agriculture Counselor to the US, Puerto Rico and Canada, Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, DC
Ton Akkerman has been the Agriculture Counselor to the US, Puerto, and Canada since August of 2014 where he represents the Dutch agricultural interests.
Before this, Ton was Minister Counselor for veterinary affairs from 2011 – 2014 in The Hague. Ton has been the Agriculture Counselor before in the Dutch Caribbean and Surinam, and before that, he was the Veterinary Counselor of the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels.
In this role, he was also responsible for veterinary affairs during the Netherlands EU presidency in 2004. Ton has great experience in dealing effectively with zoonotic and animal disease outbreaks.
He was Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer during the FMD outbreak in 2001; during the Avian Influenza in 2003 Ton was Acting Chief Veterinary Officer. From 1999 - 2001, he was asked to prepare the expansion of the European Union in 2004 with 10 new “member states” with regards to food and veterinary related affairs from his post as Veterinary Attaché in Budapest, Hungary.
Ton graduated from Utrecht University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and has been a practicing veterinarian in the fields of compendium animals and horses.
