Many entrepreneurs want to do business in the United States. They expect that they can enter the market with their Dutch mentality. Although the Netherlands and the US seem to have many similarities, the reality is completely different.

Doing business in another country is always a challenge and certainly in the US. Every state has its own culture and rules. And even within a state there are many differences.

Fortunately, more than 100 Dutch companies have preceded you in Texas. They have all found their way. At the NBSO we receive questions daily about doing business in Texas. That is why we have developed a series of workshops in collaboration with SCORE and Houston Community College with the theme "The secrets of doing business in Texas".

The topics of the workshops are:

  • Understanding social and cultural differences
  • Finding sources of financing and investment

During each workshop, different experienced entrepreneurs will give you tips and tricks about doing business in Texas. About this workshop

Are you a business owner, or thinking of starting a business, and looking for financing? Raising capital ranks among the most daunting challenges faced by small businesses. Not only do entrepreneurs have to make the case for deserving the investment, but they often aren’t aware of all the available sources.

This workshop will highlight the various types and sources of financing available to small businesses and you can meet with investors and lenders to discuss your business financing needs.

About the Speakers

Aryan Dokht, VP International Finance Department, Comerica Bank

Aryan Dokht is Vice President and Relationship Manager within the European International Division at Comerica Bank. In his role, he advises and provides corporate banking services to European companies with operations in North America. He assists corporate clients with lending, cash management, investments, trade services, and foreign exchange instruments. Aryan started his banking career in 2001 and joined Comerica’s International Division in 2006.

Over his career, he has worked with companies from many different geographic regions. In addition, Aryan is a committee member of the International Investment and Trade Committee within the Greater Houston Partnership. He has served as a board member for the Netherlands America Chamber of Commerce – Texas chapter, SABA, TGBN, and a few other non-profit entities. He speaks fluent Dutch. Lastly, Aryan graduated from TCU in International Economics and Finance. He lives in Houston with his spouse and 2 sons.

Marc Nathan, VP Client Strategy, Egan Nelson // Founder, T-Squared Agency

Marc Nathan is an experienced business development professional and startup community connector who serves as the Vice President of Client Strategy for the law firm of Egan Nelson, LLP (www.egannelson.com), and publisher of the Texas-Squared Startup Newsletter (www.texassquared.com) and the Texas-Boxed CPG Newsletter(www.bitly.com/txboxed).

Marc focuses on startup and early stage growth companies in diverse market sectors such as ecommerce, enterprise software, and consumer packaged goods. Marc is a frequent public speaker and thought leader on startups and emerging businesses. He is also an active mentor, coach, and advisor of several community organizations, incubators and accelerators including Capital Factory, Houston Technology Center, Startup Houston, Only in Houston, Support Local, Grow Together (#SLGT), Greater Houston Partnership, Houston Exponential, Houston Innovation Initiative, Houston Angel Network, Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, South by Southwest, NetSquared, BarCamp and the Houston Inventors Association

Marc founded T-Squared Agency (www.tsquaredagency.com), a boutique consulting firm that supports selected clients with comprehensive funding strategies and the means to execute growth.  Through T-Squared, Marc launched the Texas-Squared Startup Newsletter that covers startup news, opinions and events that affect the startup and tech community in the Lone Star State.

A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, Marc enjoys spending time with his wife and four daughters in Austin.


About the facilitator

Willy Verbrugghe, EVP Operations and Outreach, SCORE Houston

Willy has five masters from the University of Leuven. During his career, he led 6 $ Billion companies as President and CEO, living in Belgium, Germany, Sweden, France, and Brazil. He developed a vast experience in leadership, Industrial Manufacturing, International technology, Business Management and Operations, among other skills.

He has also been a serial entrepreneur and built four companies that he sold successfully. Today, Willy is involved in various International Chambers of Commerce in Houston, collaborating with entities such as the Mayor office, GHP, Universities, Consulates, Development agencies, Economic Missions, Trade and Investment, Training Courses and Workshops. Willy is a Certified Mentor with SCORE where he helps to startup between 5,000 and 6,000 companies in Houston every year.
